No one else has ever experienced anything to compete with being a Sioux Indian in the 1860s, with those magnificent horses, and this marvelous sweep of endless grasslands and huge herds of buffalo, and the opportunity to ride and hunt freely. The openness of Indian life, the absence of geographical constraint (borders) the absence of political constraint - they were the freest people the world has ever Known. Stephen Ambrose.

The Indians saw the land as being part of them, that they were a part of the land. They never claimed ownership and I don't think there was ever a time they put up fences. When the white settlers trespassed, it was like the land was theirs and they got papers that proved it was theirs. And that was the difference. Mary Not Help Him.
